Latest Made in the Midlands member Binding Site has joined the network of 400+ manufacturers to gain and share best practices. The team is looking forward to round table discussions at Backing Britain Breakfast mornings to learn more efficient ways of carrying out tasks, and understand how other businesses tackle challenging times. Even though the firm doesn't sit within the traditional manufacturing sector, they believe in the importance of community in the industry.

Based in Birmingham, The Binding Site supplies the world’s laboratories with clinical diagnostic tools to effectively diagnose and monitor diseases - like Cancer. Started in the early 1980s, by a group of researchers at Birmingham University, the team continuously built upon their specialist protein heritage. Today, they have an expanding menu of 200 protein assays across a range of clinical diagnostic systems.

With a similar ethos as Made in the Midlands, Binding Site decided to join the group to support fellow UK-based manufacturing companies. In addition, as a business that exports 90% of its products globally, they also wanted to learn more about best practices around this business process.

As well as supporting UK manufacturing, the team also wants to be part of inspiring the next generation of STEM - science, technology, engineering and maths students. As one of the only life sciences organisations within the Made in Group, The Binding Site wants to help encourage young people to get involved with life changing work. Paul McGarry, Director of Operations at Binding Site, said:

“Our purpose is a pure one – our products and services aim to support laboratorians, clinicians and ultimately change the lives of the patients they serve. We want to encourage people to consider a role in life sciences because of the positive and rewarding nature of our work.”

The team at The Binding Site also wants to learn how other manufacturing businesses are dealing with challenges and learning potential ways as to how they could overcome these issues. They especially look forward to finding more efficient ways for their own business processes, to ensure their longevity through innovation. Paul continued:

“It's important that UK organisations of any kind stick together and help each other out and I believe Made in the Midlands offers the platform to do just that. To be successful, it's important that we take a collaborative approach. For example, it would be great to find out how other businesses have dealt with the pandemic in terms of government guidelines and supply chain issues. We also look forward to sharing our own experiences and expertise”
